Three Hospitalized After Four-Vehicle Crash near Eisenhower Tunnel in Clear Creek County

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, CO (August 10, 2026)— A Colorado State Patrol trooper and two other people suffered injuries Monday morning in a four-vehicle crash near Eisenhower Tunnel that shut down Interstate 70 in both directions for several hours.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. near the tunnel.

The trooper was parked on the right shoulder of eastbound I-70 when he heard a radio report about a separate collision behind him in the westbound lanes.

Authorities said the trooper activated his emergency lights and began turning across the eastbound lanes to respond to the reported crash. During the maneuver, an eastbound Subaru Forester struck the patrol vehicle.

The impact sent both the patrol vehicle and Subaru across the highway median and into the westbound lanes, where they collided with two pickup trucks.

Emergency crews airlifted the trooper to a hospital for treatment. Paramedics also transported the Subaru driver and passenger, described as an elderly couple, to a hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

The occupants of the two pickup trucks were not injured.

Buck, a Colorado State Patrol police dog who was traveling in the patrol vehicle, was taken to a veterinarian as a precaution.

The crash prompted officials to close I-70 in both directions between Exit 216 at Loveland Pass and Colorado 9 near Silverthorne at approximately 11 a.m. Eastbound lanes reopened shortly before 1:45 p.m., while westbound traffic resumed at about 2:20 p.m.

Colorado Department of Transportation cameras showed traffic backed up for miles while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

Colorado State Patrol continues to investigate the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 303-239-4501 and reference case number VC260276.
