Newport Beach, CA (January 26, 2026) — A wrong-way driver speeding on State Route 73 caused a violent two-vehicle crash on Bonita Canyon Drive Friday night in Orange County, leaving three people with serious injuries.

According to the California Highway Patrol, they began receiving calls around 8:05 p.m. reporting a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near Greenfield Drive at roughly 45 mph. Additional reports soon placed the same vehicle near El Toro Road, where witnesses said it reached speeds close to 100 mph.

At about 8:16 p.m., the wrong-way vehicle crashed into another car south of Bonita Canyon Drive in Newport Beach. Emergency crews rushed three injured victims to nearby hospitals with major injuries.

Investigators said the wrong-way vehicle is registered to a person reported missing from Cypress. Authorities did not confirm any arrests as of Friday night, and the investigation remains ongoing.
