Police Investigate Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101in Santa Barbara County

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA (September 24, 2026)— A three-vehicle crash on Highway 101 involving commercial trucks spilled approximately 60 gallons of diesel fuel on Thursday morning near Sheffield Drive.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Barbara office, the collision happened at approximately 1:40 a.m. on September 24 on southbound Highway 101, just north of Sheffield Drive.

Investigators said a 34-year-old driver was operating a Freightliner in the number two lane while a truck tractor combination began passing in the number one lane.

For reasons still under investigation, the Freightliner veered left and collided with the truck-tractor combination, according to the CHP.

The impact caused the truck tractor to strike the concrete center divider.

Authorities said a third vehicle traveling in the number two lane then struck the rear of the Freightliner before veering right and hitting a guardrail along the shoulder.

The collision spilled approximately 60 gallons of diesel fuel across the southbound lanes, prompting a HAZMAT response.

Crews closed all southbound lanes while emergency personnel cleaned the fuel spill, removed the damaged vehicles, and investigated the crash.

The Montecito Fire Department reported that no one suffered serious injuries and nobody required transportation from the scene.

Caltrans District 5 announced at approximately 10:50 a.m. that all southbound lanes had reopened. Officials continued to urge motorists to use caution because emergency crews remained in the area and traffic was still moving slowly.

The CHP said it would install concrete barriers to replace damaged safety infrastructure.

Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Barbara office at 805-770-4800.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

Injured in a Santa Barbara County truck or freeway crash? Sweet Lawyers can help you understand the legal options after a serious collision.

Commercial truck collisions can create dangerous conditions well beyond the initial impact, particularly when large vehicles strike barriers, block travel lanes, or spill fuel onto a busy freeway.

We are relieved that authorities reported no serious injuries in this Highway 101 crash and that no one required transportation from the scene.

Even when a crash does not result in immediately apparent serious injuries, people involved may still experience pain or other symptoms later.

Neck pain, back discomfort, headaches, soft-tissue injuries, bruising, and other conditions can sometimes become more noticeable after the initial shock of a collision has passed.

Anyone who develops symptoms after an accident may want to seek appropriate medical attention and follow the recommendations of healthcare professionals.

Truck crashes can also involve complicated questions about how the collision occurred and whether one or more parties may share responsibility.

Investigators may review vehicle speeds, lane movements, driver statements, mechanical conditions, roadway design, visibility, commercial vehicle records, and the sequence of impacts.

When a fuel spill or damaged highway infrastructure is involved, the investigation may also include evidence related to the truck’s fuel system, maintenance history, and the extent of roadway damage.

Drivers and passengers may still face vehicle damage, medical concerns, insurance communications, lost time from work, and uncertainty about whether additional expenses will arise.

In commercial vehicle cases, additional records such as driver logs, maintenance documentation, inspection reports, and company records may also become relevant.
