San Jose, CA (February 20, 2026) — On Wednesday morning, a Caltrans inspector suffered injuries after a frightening pedestrian crash on Highway 17 north of Redwood Estates.

According to the California Highway Patrol San Jose area office, officers arrived at the scene around 11:45 a.m. and learned that a 2016 Jeep Wrangler veered off the roadway as a two-person Caltrans inspection crew operated on the right shoulder. The vehicle hit one of the workers, sending him down an embankment.

Paramedics transported the injured inspector to a nearby hospital. Officials reported his injuries were not immediately known but said he is expected to survive. The crash forced the closure of the number two lane of Highway 17 for roughly two hours.

Investigators have not determined what caused the Jeep to leave the roadway. Authorities say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors. The investigation remains ongoing.
