Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Highway 96 in Weitchpec

Weitchpec, CA (April 1, 2026) – A girl died, and a male juvenile driver suffered serious injuries in a crash on Highway 96 early Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 12:15 a.m. on April 1, roughly half a mile east of New Village Road near mile marker 24.5. 

CHP Officer Jason Esselman said the two juveniles were traveling southbound in a black Ford Ranger when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

The male driver sustained serious injuries. Authorities said the female passenger became trapped inside the vehicle and emergency crews had to extricate her using the Jaws of Life. 

Despite life-saving efforts, including CPR, she died at the scene.

Officer Esselman said investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
