Police Investigate Crash on Interstate 29 in Mound City
MOUND CITY, MO (September 18, 2026)— Several people were hospitalized in a crash on Interstate 29 Thursday morning after a tanker overturned and released hazardous materials near Mound City, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Authorities said the tanker was carrying sulfuric acid suspended in nitroglycerin when it overturned on I-29. Another vehicle traveling on the interstate subsequently struck the tanker.
The crash happened approximately four miles south of the Mound City exit and five miles north of the Oregon, Missouri, exit.
According to MSHP, three or four people were taken to an area hospital after being exposed to a chemical plume released following the crash.
Officials said foggy conditions were present at the time. A spokesperson said the materials involved are reactive in water and that the conditions contributed to the formation of a sulfuric acid and nitroglycerin plume.
Authorities temporarily evacuated homes and businesses within a one-mile radius of the crash as a precaution. The Mound City School District also canceled classes Thursday because of uncertainty surrounding the incident.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and cleanup contractors later used a drone to confirm that the tanker was no longer leaking. Crews emptied the tanker and returned it to an upright position.
Workers are using lime to absorb remaining material in the median. Officials said crews will eventually replace contaminated material with dirt and reseed the affected area.
I-29 has reopened, although one lane in each direction remains closed while cleanup operations continue.
Officials hope to remove the hazardous material by Friday, but restoration work could extend into the weekend.
Troopers are asking motorists traveling through the area to use caution while cleanup crews continue working.
