Suspected DUI Crash in Tempe Injures 12-Year-Old Passenger
Tempe, AZ (July 10, 2026) — Early Thursday morning, a woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a single-vehicle crash on Scottsdale Road in Tempe left a 12-year-old passenger injured.
The crash happened shortly before 5 a.m. near Rio Salado Parkway. First responders arrived to find a damaged SUV with the driver and a child inside.
Tempe police believe the driver was impaired at the time of the crash and took her into custody. Paramedics transported the 12-year-old passenger to a hospital with injuries that authorities said were not life-threatening.
Investigators have not confirmed the relationship between the driver and the child. Police continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
The crash temporarily closed the westbound lanes of Rio Salado Parkway for about three hours before officials reopened the roadway.
Driving defensively is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of accidents. Staying alert, keeping a safe following distance, and always expecting the unexpected can help protect you and everyone around you. Avoid distractions like texting, follow posted speed limits, use your turn signals, and stay watchful for pedestrians and cyclists. A cautious, proactive approach behind the wheel keeps roads safer for all.
Even familiar roads can become dangerous when traffic patterns, weather, or visibility change. Slowing down and staying focused can prevent serious injuries and save lives on roadways. Driving smart and staying aware make a real difference.
Driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk, especially young passengers who rely on adults for their safety. If you plan to drink or use impairing substances, arrange for a sober driver or another safe way home. Responsible decisions behind the wheel can help prevent serious injuries and save lives.
