Suspected DUI Crash on State Route 509 Injures 2 People [Tacoma, WA]

Tacoma, WA (August 18, 2026) — A frightening traffic crash on State Route 509 sent 2 people to the hospital and shut down part of the roadway for more than an hour.

Reports say that a 21-year-old Tacoma woman was driving a blue Subaru Legacy south on State Route 509 near Interstate 705 around 11:30 p.m. when she struck a green Subaru Outback traveling in the same direction. The Outback came to rest along South 21st Street.

The Legacy driver continued onto southbound Interstate 5, where she later hit a blue Nissan Sentra near State Route 16 before crashing into a concrete barrier and stopping in the HOV lane.

The Legacy driver and the 26-year-old Puyallup woman driving the Sentra both went to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities said the 21-year-old faces charges including DUI, hit-and-run, three counts of third-degree assault, driving with a suspended license, and obstruction. The crash blocked the roadway for approximately 87 minutes.
