Frightening Crash on State Route 509 Results in Fatality [Tacoma, WA]

Tacoma, WA (January 19, 2026) — A high-speed crash on State Route 509 involving a stolen vehicle left one person dead and two others seriously injured early Sunday morning in Tacoma.

Washington State Patrol troopers attempted to stop the vehicle on southbound SR-509 near Port of Tacoma Road. Instead of pulling over, the driver fled and continued southbound at extreme speeds.

The pursuit ended near 21st Street and Pacific Avenue when the driver lost control and slammed into a power pole at an estimated 110 mph. The front-seat passenger died at the scene. The driver and a rear-seat passenger both suffered serious injuries and were transported to a hospital. Authorities later took the driver into custody.
