Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Tesla Driver on Capitol Expressway in San Jose

San Jose, CA (July 15, 2026) — A pedestrian lost his life after a Tesla struck him Tuesday night in a tragic crash on West Capitol Expressway in San Jose.

The collision happened around 8:56 p.m. just east of Highway 87 near Copperfield Drive. San Jose police said a black 2018 Tesla was traveling east when it hit a man attempting to cross the roadway. The pedestrian died at the scene.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity as they await formal identification and notification of his family.

The Tesla driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He and two juvenile passengers were later taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
