Horse Killed and Injuries Reported in Madera County Auto Accident on Highway 41 near Mecca Lane

MADERA COUNTY, CA (May 7, 2026) – Wednesday morning, a devastating 2-vehicle crash on Highway 41 near Mecca Lane injured several people.

The incident involving two vehicles happened at about 4:00 a.m. on Highway 41 near Mecca Lane.

Officers said a loose horse was in the roadway when a 59-year-old man driving a 2021 Honda CR-V northbound on Highway 41 saw the animal and stopped.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 71-year-old man from Merced, driving a 2014 Honda Accord southbound, did not see the horse and struck it. The Accord then lost control and crashed into the stopped Honda CR-V in the northbound lane.

Authorities said the occupants of the southbound vehicle suffered major injuries, while the people in the northbound vehicle sustained minor injuries.
