Lubbock, TX (August 11, 2026) — 40-year-old Crystal Vela died after a tragic pedestrian crash on University Avenue in central Lubbock late Sunday night.

Police responded to the crash near the intersection of 66th Street and University Avenue shortly before midnight. Investigators identified the pedestrian as Vela and the SUV driver as 39-year-old Brian Rodriguez.

Vela suffered critical injuries and was taken to University Medical Center, where she later died.

Police arrested Rodriguez and booked him into the Lubbock County Detention Center on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Authorities said they have not yet filed charges against him specifically in connection with Vela’s death because the investigation remains ongoing. Additional charges could follow as investigators gather more evidence.
