Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Salmon River Road in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA (December 11, 2025) — A tragic crash on Salmon River Road in Rancho Peñasquitos has once again raised urgent concerns about bicycle safety in San Diego, after a 60-year-old cyclist was struck and killed Wednesday evening.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the fatal collision occurred around 5:35 p.m. when a 51-year-old woman driving a 2019 Toyota Camry struck the cyclist from behind.

Both the driver and the cyclist were reportedly traveling in the same direction. The woman told officers she did not see the cyclist before the impact.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene but tragically pronounced the cyclist dead.

Authorities have confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the incident. The SDPD Traffic Division is now leading the investigation into what caused the crash.

Community members and safety advocates say this tragedy reflects a long-standing pattern of dangerous conditions for cyclists in the region.

Ian Hembree of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition emphasized that infrastructure—not just individual behavior—is key to preventing such fatalities.

Residents in the area described Salmon River Road as a busy corridor with blind curves, poor lighting, and a lack of signage—features that make it unsafe for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Many families have voiced concerns, saying the road isn’t designed for shared use, despite high foot and bike traffic, especially after school hours.

As the investigation continues, local organizations and residents are renewing their call for safer road design, including protected bike lanes, better lighting, and more visible speed limit signs.

Police are asking any witnesses to contact the SDPD Traffic Division.
