San Luis Obispo County, CA (August 24, 2025) — Authorities confirmed that 86-year-old David Peterson of Paso Robles, reported missing two weeks ago, was found dead Thursday in a vehicle off Highway 58 near the Kern–San Luis Obispo County line.

Investigators from the California Highway Patrol’s Buttonwillow office and the Paso Robles Police Department are handling the case. It remains unclear whether the man died from a medical emergency or as a result of a crash.

Officials say that Peterson’s car was discovered off the roadway around 10:50 a.m. Paso Robles Police verified his identity at the scene. Peterson was first reported missing on August 7 after a neighbor noticed he had not returned home.
