Deadly Auto-Pedestrian Crash on Harris Street Led to Loss of Life [Eureka, CA]

Eureka, CA (September 28, 2024) On Friday morning, a horrific auto-pedestrian crash on Harris Street claimed the life of a person.

According to Eureka police, the fatal accident happened at about 7:58 a.m. at the intersection of W. Harris Street and Elizabeth Street.

Reports say that a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision happened near the intersection.

Humboldt Bay Fire (HBF) personnel arrived on the scene first and found an unresponsive male in the roadway. They initiated life-saving efforts with the assistance of City Ambulance, but despite their attempts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say that the male was crossing W. Harris Street on his mobility scooter outside of a crosswalk and away from the intersection.

A vehicle traveling east in the left lane of W. Harris Street struck the scooter, causing the rider to be thrown into the roadway.

Additionally, a second vehicle, which had entered W. Harris Street from Prospect Avenue, failed to see the man lying in the roadway and struck him as well.

Officials say that all parties involved, including witnesses, remained at the scene and are cooperating with the investigation. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries to the occupants of either vehicle.

Authorities will release the victim’s name once they notify the next of kin. Investigators noted that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in this collision, and speed does not seem to be an issue, as witnesses described the vehicles traveling at reasonable speeds. However, the rising sun created visibility challenges that likely contributed to the accident.

Eureka Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Team, along with Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit and a Forensic Analyst, took over the investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing, and EPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Field Training Officer Mark Sheldon at 707-441-4300.
