Two People Critical After Major Rollover Crash on Interstate 10 in Chambers County

Chambers County, TX (March 19, 2026) – One person died, and multiple others suffered injuries after a major rollover crash on Interstate 10 involving 10 vehicles on Thursday morning, according to officials.

The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the person who died as a 75-year-old man from Louisiana. 

Authorities said two other people suffered critical injuries, while at least seven more sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said the crash occurred around 8 a.m., after several vehicles slowed or stopped because of an earlier collision. 

DPS reported that the driver of a big rig, a 48-year-old man, could not control the truck, rear-ended another vehicle, and triggered a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles.

Later that day, a family member traveled from Louisiana to the scene and told ABC13 that their loved one had been driving the big rig. The family said he was okay.

ABC13 also reported that this stretch of I-10 was recently included in a speed limit increase. TxDOT confirmed last week that it raised the posted speed from 65 mph to 75 mph to create a more consistent driving speed along the corridor.

Using TxDOT data, ABC13 found that this section of I-10 recorded 44 crashes last year, the highest total in the last five years.

Officials also said the big rig was carrying oil, which led to a hazmat spill. DPS stated that Chambers County and the trucking company sent hazmat teams to contain and clean the spill before it threatened the public.

The crash caused hours of traffic backups, shutting down both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-10, with only feeder roads providing limited relief.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced whether anyone will face charges.
