Deadly Traffic Crash on I-70 Shuts Traffic Down [Summit County, CO]

Summit County, CO (July 4, 2025) On Thursday afternoon, a deadly traffic crash on I-70 claimed he life of a person and a dog.

According to authorities, the fatal crash happened at about 1 p.m. near mile marker 218

Reports say that a crash involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck with a trailer shut down westbound Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel for several hours.

Authorities say that the collision triggered a large fire, producing heavy smoke. The crash killed one person and a dog inside the pickup truck. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity. The semi-truck driver was not injured.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) closed the westbound lanes for about four hours, reopening them after 5 p.m. However, major traffic delays persisted well into the evening. Eastbound lanes also briefly closed but reopened roughly an hour after the incident. CDOT urged drivers to avoid traveling from Denver to the mountains via I-70 and US 285 due to congestion and extreme heat.
