35-Year-Old Derrick Demonte Jones Injured in Highway 302 Deadly Crash [Ector County, TX]

Ector County, TX (May 15, 2025) – 35-year-old Derrick Demonte Jones of Fort Worth was injured following a Highway 302 deadly crash early Monday morning.

The fatal big rig crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on May 12 at the intersection with FM 866.

Investigators said 28-year-old Luther Bernard Young Jr. of Flower Mound was driving a 2019 Freightliner SD 122, hauling a trailer. Young Jr was traveling north on FM 866 when he stopped at the intersection with Highway 302. 

Young Jr drove through the intersection, failing to yield the right of way to an eastbound 2018 International HX620 which was also hauling a trailer. 

The International driven by Jones struck the Freightliner.

Troopers declared Luther Bernard Young Jr dead at the scene. They said he was not wearing a seatbelt during the collision.

Moreover, Jones was transported to Odessa Medical Center with minor injuries. Officers said was wearing a seatbelt.

The authorities are  investigating the cause of the collision.
