HOUSTON, TX (April 22, 2026) – Thursday night, a 5-year-old passenger died in a devastating speeding crash on 16700 Gulf Freeway near FM 2351.

The incident happened when 60-year-old Daniel Ruiz failed to control his speeding car. Then, he hit another vehicle in the 16700 block of Gulf Freeway.

Officials said a 5-year-old girl was in Ruiz’s vehicle, sitting in the front passenger seat without a child safety seat. After the crash, she was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to the Houston Police Department.

Investigators said no one in the other vehicle required medical treatment.

Court records show Ruiz has been charged with manslaughter and was denied bond. Documents also indicate Ruiz had a prior charge in December 2024 for abandoning a child with the intent to return, for which probation was ordered.
