Injuries Reported in Shasta County Vehicle Crash on Hirz Mountain Road near Point McCloud

SHASTA COUNTY, CA (July 1, 2026) – Tuesday afternoon, a disastrous auto accident on Hirz Mountain Road near Point McCloud injured 3.

The incident happened at about 5:45 p.m. on northbound Hirz Mountain Road, southwest of Point McCloud and east of Lakehead.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a white Jeep Wrangler left Hirz Mountain Road after failing to negotiate a turn southwest of Point McCloud and east of Lakehead.

Investigators said the Jeep overturned and plunged about 100 feet down a steep ravine. The driver and two rear-seat passengers were ejected during the crash.

A 66-year-old Redding man suffered major injuries, while the 39-year-old Redding driver and two female passengers, ages 41 and 42, sustained minor injuries.

Authorities said one of the passengers walked for about 15 minutes to find cell service and call 911. Due to the remote location, first responders took about 20 minutes to reach the crash site.

Officials said speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, while alcohol and drugs are not suspected.

Two patients were airlifted by CHP Air Operations to awaiting ground ambulances, while the remaining two were transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center. The crash remains under investigation.
