U.S. Air Force Firefighter Critically Injured in South Austin Hit-and-Run

Austin, TX (June 3, 2025) — Austin police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left 23-year-old Dominic Dubas, a U.S. Air Force firefighter, with life-threatening injuries in South Austin.

Officers responded Saturday night to South Congress Avenue near William Cannon Drive after receiving reports of a person lying in the roadway. When they arrived, they found Dubas seriously injured and rushed him to a hospital. Investigators believe a vehicle struck him while he was walking and then fled the scene.

Dubas, an active-duty Air Force firefighter stationed in Alaska, was visiting Austin with friends at the time of the crash. According to his family, he had left his South Austin rental to get food shortly before the incident happened.

The collision caused severe injuries, including traumatic brain and spinal cord damage. Dubas underwent emergency surgery and remains on life support.

Family members said he had recently been preparing for a transfer to a new duty station in Maryland and was looking forward to the next stage of his military career.

Austin police continue to investigate the crash and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has surveillance or dashcam footage from the area of South Congress Avenue near Clearday Drive on May 30 to come forward.

Do The Right Thing. Stay. Help. Take Responsibility.

A hit-and-run is not just a crime, but a devastating act of cowardice leaving victims injured, scared, and sometimes fighting for their lives. If you’re involved in a traffic accident, stop immediately. Call 911. Help those who are hurt.

Remember that fleeing the scene only worsens the situation and carries serious legal consequences, including felony charges. Victims deserve accountability and justice.

Hit-and-run crashes can leave victims without immediate assistance when every second matters. Drivers involved in a collision should stop, call emergency services, and remain at the scene. Anyone who witnesses a hit-and-run is encouraged to share information with investigators, as even small details can help bring accountability and support recovery efforts for victims and their families.

Steps to Take When You’ve Been in a Car Accident

If you get into a traffic accident, it can be a frightening situation and many people do not know what to do afterwards, which may have a big impact on your safety as well as your rights.

First, assess yourself and others for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately. If you can move your vehicle, do so in a safe location, and put on your hazard lights to warn other drivers. Exchange details with the other driver such as names, numbers, insurance company information, and license plate numbers. (And if there are witnesses nearby, try to get their information, too.)

Photograph the scene, damage to the vehicles and any injuries. If the damage appears to be minor, document everything anyway.

Then get medical care — even if you feel fine. Some injuries can have a delayed presentation. Lastly, reach out to a seasoned personal injury lawyer, such as Sweet Lawyers. They’ll explain your legal rights and navigate the insurance claims process, so you can focus on what’s most important.

Those minutes after a crash are critical. Staying calm, acting swiftly and figuring out what kind of aid is available could help protect your health, your finances and your future.
