18-Wheeler Driver Abel Zamudio-Gamboa Dead in I-20 Collision [Dallas, TX]

Driver Jailed Following Deadly Big Rig Crash on EB Interstate 20

Dallas, TX (July 17, 2026) – 39-year-old Abel Zamudio-Gamboa was fatally injured following an Interstate 20 hit-and-run crash early Wednesday.

It was around 12:22 a.m. on July 15 when the deadly crash happened on the eastbound freeway between Dowdy Ferry Road and St. Augustine Road.

According to the authorities, an 18-wheeler driven by Zamudio-Gamboa experienced mechanical issues and stopped on the shoulder of the freeway. Another 18-wheeler driver arrived to delivered a replacement part and assist him.

Zamudio-Gamboa was outside his truck repairing, when a suspect driver approached the shoulder and struck him.

Police said the suspect drove eastbound on the freeway after the crash.

Police on Thursday received a report from a local business owner that one of its drivers returned their company vehicle with damage matching the vehicle described in the police report.

The authorities later arrested Elana Kaye Peronis on a charge of Collision Involving Death, and booked the driver into the Dallas County Jail.
