Police Investigate Multi-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 17 in Phoenix

PHOENIX, AZ (September 9, 2026) – One person suffered serious injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 17 near Camelback Road Tuesday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The collision happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. on September 9.

DPS said a vehicle with a flat tire was stopped or disabled in the HOV lane when a second vehicle struck it, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving additional vehicles.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained serious injuries in the crash. Authorities said the other people involved suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

DPS also reported that the second driver was suspected of impairment. Authorities have not released additional details about the suspected impairment or whether any charges have been filed.

Officials did not immediately provide information about how many vehicles were involved or the identities of those injured.

The crash disrupted traffic on southbound I-17 while emergency crews and investigators responded to the scene.

Authorities later reopened the roadway.

DPS continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including what led to the initial impact and whether impairment or other factors contributed to the crash.

Injured in a Phoenix Freeway Crash? Contact Sweet Lawyers to Learn About Your Legal Options

A multi-vehicle freeway crash can create serious injuries and complicated questions about responsibility.

When a chain-reaction collision involves a disabled vehicle, multiple drivers, and possible impairment, determining exactly how the crash unfolded may require a detailed investigation.

At Sweet Lawyers, we understand how overwhelming the aftermath of a serious traffic accident can be.

Injured people may face hospitalization, diagnostic testing, follow-up appointments, rehabilitation, missed work, vehicle damage, and uncertainty about insurance coverage while they are still trying to recover physically.

Chain-reaction crashes can involve multiple points of impact and more than one contributing factor.

Investigators may review roadway conditions, vehicle positions, tire damage, skid marks, photographs, witness statements, surveillance footage, electronic vehicle data, and other evidence to determine the sequence of events.

When authorities suspect impairment, additional records and testing may also become part of the investigation. These findings can help clarify whether alcohol, drugs, medication, fatigue, or another condition played a role, although the results of any official investigation are necessary before conclusions can be reached.

For injured motorists and passengers, keeping organized documentation can be important.

Medical records, bills, photographs of injuries and vehicle damage, repair estimates, towing receipts, police reports, and insurance correspondence may help show how the collision affected a person’s health, finances, and daily life.
