SANTA CRUZ, CA (May 19, 2026) – Monday afternoon, a driver was critically injured after an alarming vehicle crash on Highway 1 near Greyhound State Beach.

The crash occurred near Greyhound Rock State Beach in Santa Cruz County, between Davenport and Año Nuevo State Park.

Authorities said the driver went over a steep cliff and fell about 500 feet onto a beach below.

State park lifeguards swam down to the isolated pocket beach, found one patient, and performed CPR, according to fire officials. A helicopter rescue team later lowered a basket to retrieve the critically injured victim and bring them back up to Highway 1.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
