Police Search for Driver After Hit-And-Run Crash on Interstate 80 in Placer County

PLACER COUNTY, CA (May 26, 2026)— A pickup truck driver died Tuesday night after a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 80 involving a big rig.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s Auburn division, the crash happened around 11:10 p.m. near the Placer Hills Road overcrossing.

CHP said a big rig hauling a water tank-trailer was traveling westbound on I-80 when the driver lost control and struck the concrete center divide.

The impact caused the trailer to detach from the big rig and enter the eastbound lanes. A pickup truck traveling eastbound then crashed into the detached trailer.

The pickup driver died from the collision. CHP said the victim was a man from Colfax, but authorities have not yet released his identity.

After the crash, the big rig driver fled the scene. CHP said officers are searching for the driver. The owner and operator of the big rig is cooperating with investigators.
