Edgar Amaya Arrested in El Paso DWI Crash [El Paso, TX]

DWI Arrest Follows Off-Road Vehicle Crash That Seriously Injured Passenger

El Paso, TX (August 24, 2026) — Authorities arrested a 40-year-old Edgar Amaya after an off-road vehicle crashed into a barrier on a pedestrian walkway in El Paso, seriously injuring a passenger.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 1:48 a.m. to the 900 block of O.T. Smith Road following reports of a serious crash.

Investigators determined that a blue Can-Am Maverick had been traveling north on a paved walkway reserved for pedestrians.

The walkway contains pipe barriers designed to prevent vehicles from entering. As the Can-Am approached one of the barriers, driver Edgar Amaya lost control and struck it. The front passenger suffered serious injuries and went to a local hospital for treatment.

Deputies arrested Amaya on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility, where authorities set his bond at $5,000. He was later released.

The investigation remains ongoing.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), a person is injured in a motor vehicle crash every two minutes in Texas. In 2021 alone, more than 239,000 people were hurt in traffic accidents statewide — a sobering reminder that road safety is truly a matter of life and death.

Sadly, reckless and distracted driving continues to claim lives every day. Every few hours, another fatal crash happens somewhere in Texas. That’s why it’s so important to drive defensively, stay alert, follow the speed limit, and keep an eye out for others on the road. Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility.

Never drive while impaired, and never operate off-road vehicles in areas designated for pedestrians. One poor decision can cause life-changing injuries.
