Riverside Man, 43, Killed in Big Bear Hit-and-Run Crash
Big Bear, CA (September 2, 2026) — 43-year-old Edgar Chavez of Riverside died after a vehicle struck him while he worked inside a construction closure on State Route 38 in Big Bear.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 7:07 a.m. on August 31, 2026, on eastbound Highway 38 east of Green Way Drive. Investigators determined that a 2012 Toyota driven by 90-year-old Donald Parker entered the closed construction area and struck Chavez, who was working in the roadway.
Parker allegedly continued eastbound without stopping. Emergency crews treated Chavez at the scene before taking him to Bear Valley Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
CHP officers arrested Parker later that afternoon in Big Bear Lake. Authorities booked him on charges related to voluntary manslaughter and an injury hit-and-run. He was later released on bail.
The crash closed the highway for several hours while investigators examined the scene. CHP’s investigation remains ongoing.
Sweet Lawyers extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Edgar Chavez. We hope they find strength and support during this difficult time.
Finding Support and Accountability After a Sudden Loss
Losing someone you love in an unexpected accident can turn your world upside down. Along with the deep emotional pain, families are often faced with practical and financial concerns—medical bills, funeral arrangements, and the sudden loss of emotional and financial support. These challenges can feel overwhelming when you’re already grieving.
During times like these, it’s important to know that help is available. A wrongful death claim may provide a path toward accountability and financial stability, helping families protect their future while honoring their loved one’s memory.
Through a wrongful death claim, families may be able to seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical care related to the final injuries
- Lost income and future financial support
- Emotional pain and loss of companionship
This process isn’t just about financial recovery—it’s about accountability. When negligence, reckless behavior, or impaired driving contributes to a fatal accident, holding the responsible party accountable can help bring justice and reduce the risk of similar tragedies happening to others.
While nothing can ever replace the life that was lost, pursuing justice can offer families a sense of closure and peace. It’s one meaningful way to honor a loved one’s life and legacy.
