Mesquite, TX (July 18, 2026) — Edwin Valdez, a 22-year-old construction worker and father, lost his life after an off-duty police officer struck him while he was working in a construction zone along Interstate 635 in Mesquite.

The fatal crash happened at approximately 11:30 p.m. near Highway 80. Authorities said a construction crew was relocating a crane across the interstate when the incident happened.

According to investigators, an off-duty officer with the Southwestern Christian College Police Department was driving southbound on I-635 to prepare for an upcoming road closure. During the operation, the officer’s vehicle struck construction worker Edwin Valdez, who was directing the crane across the freeway.

Emergency responders transported Valdez to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
