Aztec Man Arrested After Allegedly Striking Cyclist on U.S. Highway 550 Near Durango
Durango, CO (July 23, 2026) — Authorities arrested a 39-year-old Thomas Huntsman of Aztec after he allegedly struck 32-year-old Elliott Saslow while driving on U.S. Highway 550 south of Durango Tuesday evening.
The crash occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. near County Road 302. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the driver, identified as Thomas Huntsman, drifted into a turn lane, hit a cyclist, knocked down a stop sign, and crashed into a deer fence.
Investigators said Huntsman admitted to drinking three beers about an hour before the collision. Officers also found an open bottle of Southern Comfort in his pickup truck. He allegedly refused a voluntary field sobriety test, prompting authorities to obtain a warrant for a blood-alcohol test.
The injured cyclist, identified by the local cycling community as Saslow, suffered multiple broken bones, including a fractured pelvis. Emergency responders transported him to Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.
Huntsman was arrested on suspicion of felony vehicular assault, driving under the influence, driving with an open container of alcohol, and driving without insurance. Authorities also reported that he acted aggressively at the crash scene. He has since been released from the La Plata County Jail, and formal charges are expected to be filed in early August.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Traffic accidents can happen in the blink of an eye — but their effects can last a lifetime. Every time you get behind the wheel, remember: staying alert and making safe choices can save lives. Avoid distractions, never drive under the influence, and always wear your seatbelt. Follow speed limits, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists who share the road with you.
Take that extra moment to look both ways and yield cautiously at intersections — sometimes, that one second of attention can prevent a serious or even life-threatening crash.
Driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk, including cyclists and pedestrians. Always drive sober, remain alert, and give bicyclists plenty of space to help prevent serious and life-changing crashes.
