Oakland, CA (May 06, 2025) – 49-year-old Elmo Ballard Jr. lost his life Sunday morning after a tragic hit-and-run collision on San Pablo Avenue.

According to authorities, the shocking incident happened at around 11:24 a.m. at the intersection of 18th Street and San Pablo Avenue.

Reports say that a hit-and-run driver struck and killed Ballard as he rode an electric scooter Sunday morning in Oakland’s Uptown neighborhood.

Ballard traveled northbound in a pedestrian crosswalk on San Pablo Avenue when a southbound Mazda 6 station wagon turned left onto 18th Street and hit him. The vehicle dragged Ballard several feet before coming to a stop. The driver then fled the scene on foot.

Emergency crews extricated Ballard from under the vehicle and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released a description of the suspect, and it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
