Fatal Oakland Crash Involving Felony Suspect Kills Pedestrian, Injures Another
Oakland, CA (May 30, 2025) – A pedestrian was killed, while a others were hurt after a horrific crash on Park Boulevard that involved 18-year-old suspect, Eric Hernandez-Garcia.
According to authorities, the fatal crash happened near Park Boulevard and 21st Street.
Reports say that Eric Scott Hernandez-Garcia of Oakland, fled from California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers after they attempted a traffic stop related to a felony evading case linked to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
The attempted stop occurred near 102nd Avenue and International Boulevard. When officers initiated the stop, Hernandez-Garcia sped off, prompting CHP to end the ground pursuit within 37 seconds while an aircraft continued tracking the vehicle.
The suspect drove across city streets and the freeway for approximately 15 minutes before stopping near 5th Avenue and E. 19th Street.
As officers approached, he briefly exited the car, then jumped back in and fled again. Officers resumed pursuit, which led to a collision with a minivan at Park Boulevard and 21st Street. CHP ended the chase again within 30 seconds.
About 20 seconds later, the suspect struck two pedestrians, a man and a woman in their 40s, who were reportedly out for an evening walk.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and provided life-saving aid, but the man died at the scene. The woman survived with injuries and was later released from the hospital. The minivan occupants sustained only minor injuries.
This incident occurs amid ongoing debate over Oakland’s pursuit policy, which limits chases exceeding 50 mph unless authorized by a commander.
We at Sweet Lawyers extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the man who tragically lost his life. Our thoughts also remain with the woman recovering from this traumatic incident.
When a Deadly Traffic Collision Happens
The loss of a loved one in a fatal traffic accident is a devastating experience for families. In addition to the emotional trauma, the bereaved are often left facing unforeseen financial burdens. When this happens, filing a wrongful death claim can provide vital support, both legally and financially. It is important to understand that a wrongful death claim holds the responsible party accountable and allows the family of the deceased to seek compensation for their loss.
One of the primary reasons to pursue a wrongful death claim following a deadly traffic accident is to recover financial losses, which may include funeral expenses, medical costs for the deceased’s final treatment, and lost wages. If the deceased was the primary earner in the family, the surviving loved ones may struggle to cover day-to-day expenses without the deceased’s income. Compensation from a wrongful death lawsuit can help ease the financial strain caused by this loss.

Additionally, a wrongful death claim serves as a way to hold negligent parties responsible. Whether the crash was caused by a drunk driver, distracted driving, or a defective vehicle, the at-fault party should be held accountable for their actions. The legal process ensures that justice is pursued and can also raise awareness about dangerous behaviors that may have contributed to the collision and prevent similar accidents from happening.
Pursuing a wrongful death claim can offer a sense of closure and justice to grieving families. Yes, no financial compensation can replace the lost life of a loved one. Still, it can provide families with a sense of resolution, knowing that the responsible party has been held liable for their actions.
