Police Search for Driver After Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash in Spring Valley

SPRING VALLEY, CA (November 27, 2025) — A devastating hit-and-run crash on State Route 125 claimed the life of a 21-year-old Esteban Rodriguez early Wednesday morning, just south of Troy Street, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

CHP officers arrived at the scene around 5:30 a.m. and found a Lexus that had veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree along the east embankment. 

Officer Jasmine Lopez reported that the driver of the Lexus had made an unsafe lane change and collided with a light-colored sedan. 

The impact caused the Lexus to lose control before slamming into the tree.

The driver, a young man from Spring Valley, died at the scene. His identity was later released to the public as Esteban Rodriguez, of Spring Valley.

Authorities say a witness saw the other vehicle—described as a light-colored sedan—briefly pull over to the shoulder after the crash. 

The driver exited the vehicle but quickly got back in and fled the scene heading northbound on SR-125. The suspect remains at large.

CHP Captain Michael Monteagudo emphasized the seriousness of fleeing an accident: “Fleeing the scene of a crash is not only a criminal offense, but it is a betrayal of the responsibility every driver has to others on the road.”

At this time, it remains unclear if impairment was a factor. Investigators urge anyone with information about the crash to contact the El Cajon CHP office at 619-219-6900.
