Bellingham, WA (January 9, 2025) On Tuesday evening, 24-year-old Sean Smet lost his life after a tragic collision on southbound Interstate 5.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the fatal I-5 crash happened near the Meridian exit at around 8:45 p.m.

Reports say that the tragic collision in Bellingham on Tuesday night claimed the life of Sean M. Smet.

Authorities began investigating after responding to a vehicle rollover crash. Officials say that Smet, the driver of the overturned vehicle, exited his car and ran across I-5 into oncoming traffic.

A Mount Vernon woman driving in the opposite direction struck Smet, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not determined why Smet ran across the freeway, and he was not wanted by police at the time of the incident.

The crash shut down both directions of I-5 between Meridian Street and Northwest Avenue for several hours. Traffic resumed normal flow shortly after midnight.
