Man Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run That Killed Smith County Bicyclist
Smith County, TX (September 12, 2026) — 56-year-old Hideaway man faces a charge in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed Felix Hernandez Nava in Smith County.
The crash happened around 8:45 p.m. on FM 16 west of Toll 49. Authorities said 48-year-old Nava had stopped his e-bike near a guardrail when a westbound pickup struck him and continued driving.
Nava died at the scene. Investigators found vehicle debris, including pieces of a headlamp and turn signal, that pointed to a 2019 Ford F-250 or F-350.
Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage showing a white Ford F-250 near the crash site around the time of the collision. Additional footage from the Hideaway Lake community showed a damaged white 2019 F-250 passing through a security checkpoint shortly after the crash. Authorities traced the vehicle to Jeffrey Alan Plank.
On September 3, a DPS trooper located the truck at a Tyler-area plant nursery. The vehicle had significant damage to its front-right side that appeared consistent with evidence from the crash.
Plank was arrested the same day and booked on a collision involving death charge. The investigation remains ongoing.
