Five People Killed, One Seriously Injured in Highway 299 Head-On Crash

Shasta County, CA (September 22, 2026) — On Saturday night, five people died, and another suffered major injuries in a fiery head-on collision on Highway 299 near Whiskeytown Lake in Shasta County, California.

The crash happened around 9:10 p.m. east of Whiskey Creek Road. A westbound Honda Civic carrying three people crossed the double-yellow lines and collided with an eastbound 2007 Toyota Prius carrying three occupants.

All three people inside the Honda died at the scene, along with the Prius driver. One of the Prius passengers later died after being taken to a hospital, while the other suffered major injuries.

Both vehicles caught fire, and Highway 299 was closed in both directions while emergency crews responded. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the collision and has not released the victims’ identities pending notification of their families.
