Loose Semi-Truck Tire Kills 73-Year-Old Driver on I-64 in St. Louis County

St. Louis County, MO (April 26, 2026) — A frightening accident on Interstate 64 led to the death of a 73-year-old man from Richmond Heights in St. Louis County.

Reports say that a detached tire from a tractor-trailer struck his vehicle on Interstate 64 on April 23. The victim was driving a Chevrolet Bolt in the eastbound lanes near the Interstate 270 exit in Town and Country when two tires came off a towed unit attached to a semitruck. The tires hit the concrete median, launched into the air, and crashed through the roof of the man’s car, fatally injuring him.

Emergency crews transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m.

The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. and forced authorities to shut down the busy interstate, causing significant traffic backups for hours. Crews later cleared the scene and reopened the roadway by late afternoon.

The driver of the semitruck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Authorities continue to examine what caused the tires to detach.
