Two Killed After Speeding Vehicle Crashes and Catches Fire in Tacoma Area

Tacoma, WA (July 5, 2026) — Two people lost their lives early Saturday after a frightening crash on 74th Street, where a speeding vehicle crashed into a power pole and railroad crossing equipment before erupting in flames near the Tacoma-Lakewood area.

The collision happened at approximately 1:20 a.m. as the vehicle traveled westbound on 74th Street at a high rate of speed. According to authorities, a Lakewood police officer observed the vehicle speeding and activated emergency lights and a siren. Before the officer could catch up, the vehicle crossed lanes and slammed into a power pole and railroad crossing infrastructure near 74th Street and South Tacoma Way.

The impact ejected both the driver and passenger, who died at the scene. The vehicle caught fire immediately after the crash, and fireworks inside the car began exploding, initially preventing first responders from determining whether anyone remained inside.

Investigators later confirmed that both occupants had been thrown from the vehicle. Authorities have not released their identities, ages, or genders. Officials also have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Because the collision occurred within Tacoma city limits, the Tacoma Police Department is leading the investigation. No other injuries were reported.
