Frightening Crash on Highway 71 Injures 4 People [Kansas City, MO]

Kansas City, MO (March 20, 2026) — Four people suffered injuries in a late-night crash on Highway 71 near downtown Kansas City, with two victims fighting for their lives after their vehicle caught fire.

The crash happened just before midnight Tuesday in the northbound lanes near 19th Street. Authorities said a Mercedes S55 traveling at high speed slammed into the rear of a semi tractor, triggering a violent chain reaction.

The impact caused the semi to spin across multiple lanes before stopping on the left shoulder. Meanwhile, the Mercedes burst into flames in the middle of the highway, leaving its occupants severely hurt.

Emergency crews rushed the driver and front-seat passenger from the Mercedes to a hospital with critical and serious injuries. By Wednesday morning, the driver remained in critical condition, while the passenger continued to receive treatment for serious injuries.

Two occupants from the semi—a driver and a passenger—also sustained injuries, though officials said their conditions were not life-threatening.
