Two Killed in Early-Morning Interstate 5 Crash Near Newman

Newman, CA (June 25, 2025) — Two people lost their lives in a crash on Interstate 5 early Monday morning near Newman in Stanislaus County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 2:25 a.m. on the southbound I-5, just north of Stuhr Road.

Investigators said a Dodge van was traveling at an unsafe speed when it slammed into the rear of a big rig approximately 300 feet north of a lane closure that had been established because of an earlier crash.

The 19-year-old driver from Los Angeles and his front-seat passenger suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Authorities reported that neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt. The big rig driver was not injured. Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The fatal collision happened in an area where several crashes had already happened overnight. The chain of incidents began shortly before midnight when a Honda sedan struck the rear of a slower-moving Chevrolet Equinox. After that crash, the Honda remained in the roadway and was hit by multiple vehicles, resulting in several minor injuries and one person suffering major injuries.

Authorities closed portions of the roadway for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene. The driver involved in the initial collision was later arrested on suspicion of DUI.
