Modesto Man Dies After Van Overturns Down Embankment in Lake County

Lake County, CA (November 16, 2025) — 30-year-old Gabriel Guarchaj-Ajtzalam of Modesto, lost his life Friday morning after a solo-vehicle crash along Highway 20 in Lake County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2003 Chevy Express van was traveling east on Highway 20 when the driver lost control on a downhill curve near milepost 41, east of New Long Valley Road. The van veered off the roadway and rolled down a steep embankment, ejecting Guarchaj-Ajtzalam from the front passenger seat.

Two unrestrained passengers riding in the back suffered moderate injuries. The driver and a front middle passenger were not hurt. CHP reported that alcohol or drugs did not appear to factor into the crash.

Emergency crews, including an air ambulance, responded shortly after the crash was reported around 9 a.m. It remains unclear whether Guarchaj-Ajtzalam died at the scene or after being transported for medical care.
