DUI Crash on California Avenue in Bakersfield Leaves One Man Dead

Bakersfield, CA (June 30, 2026) — Early Sunday morning, a man died after a suspected DUI crash at the intersection of California Avenue and Chester Lane, leading to the arrest of 23-year-old Gavin Mundschau.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the collision happened shortly after midnight when a silver BMW was traveling southbound on Chester Lane. Investigators said a silver Mazda, driven by Mundschau, entered the intersection westbound against a red light and crashed into the BMW.

The BMW driver suffered severe injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.

Mundschau sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Police determined he was under the influence at the time of the crash. After receiving medical clearance, he was scheduled to be booked into the Kern County Sheriff’s Office jail on charges related to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
