Gina Byrd and Shane Hescox Hurt in 3-Car Crash on I-5 [Stanwood, WA]

Two Injured After Rollover Crash on Interstate 5 Near Stanwood

Stanwood, WA (May 18, 2025)Gina Byrd and Shane Hescox suffered injuries in a three-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 5 near Stanwood on Friday evening, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collision happened around 7:03 p.m. near the northbound on-ramp from 236th Street Northeast in Snohomish County.

Investigators said 57-year-old Gina R. Byrd of East Wenatchee was driving a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer on the on-ramp when a 2008 Honda Civic collided with her SUV. The impact pushed the Mercury into a 1999 commercial car hauler traveling northbound on I-5.

The Mercury overturned and came to rest on its roof along the right shoulder of the ramp. Byrd and her passenger, 47-year-old Shane M. Hescox of Fort Collins, Colorado, suffered injuries and were taken to Skagit Valley Hospital.

Authorities said the Honda driver, 40-year-old Andrew I. Sturm of La Conner, and the car hauler driver, 59-year-old Daniel J. Schroeder of Lynden, were not injured.

Troopers reported all drivers were wearing seatbelts, while the passenger in the Mercury was not restrained. Investigators said drugs and alcohol did not contribute to the crash. The cause of the collision and any possible charges remain under investigation.

Traffic accidents can happen in the blink of an eye — but their effects can last a lifetime. Every time you get behind the wheel, remember: staying alert and making safe choices can save lives. Avoid distractions, never drive under the influence, and always wear your seatbelt. Follow speed limits, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists who share the road with you.

Take that extra moment to look both ways and yield cautiously at intersections — sometimes, that one second of attention can prevent a serious or even life-threatening crash.

Rollover crashes can cause life-changing injuries in seconds. Drivers and passengers should always wear seatbelts and stay alert when merging onto busy highways to help reduce the risk of serious accidents.
