Police Investigate Fatal Crash on River Road in Monterey County

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (May 28, 2026)— A 16-year-old girl died, and two drivers suffered suspected major injuries after a two-vehicle crash on River Road Thursday morning near Chualar.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded around 8:28 a.m. to the crash on River Road, south of Parker Road.

CHP said a 26-year-old King City man was driving a Toyota sedan northbound on River Road with a 16-year-old girl from Soledad as his passenger. At the same time, a 47-year-old Soledad man was driving a Mercedes-Benz coupe southbound.

For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota crossed over the solid double yellow lines into the southbound lane. The Mercedes then struck the right side of the Toyota.

Emergency responders pronounced the teenage passenger dead at the scene. The Monterey County Coroner’s Office will release her identity after notifying her family.

Paramedics transported the Toyota driver to a local hospital with suspected major injuries. The Mercedes driver was also taken to a local hospital with suspected major injuries.

Authorities closed River Road in both directions from Parker Road to Odonata Winery for several hours while crews responded and investigators examined the scene. The roadway has since reopened.

CHP said alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.
