Head-On Collision on SR 542 Claims a Life

Ferndale Man Killed in Head-On Crash on Mount Baker Highway in Whatcom County

Whatcom County, WA (May 18, 2025) — A deadly head-on collision on SR 542 shut down both directions of Mount Baker Highway in Whatcom County on Saturday morning.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash happened around 10:35 a.m. near milepost 19 in the 5800 block of SR 542. Investigators said a 2009 Mazda traveling westbound crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound 1992 Toyota 4Runner.

The 62-year-old driver of the Mazda, a Ferndale resident, died at the scene. The 27-year-old driver of the Toyota, from Maple Falls, suffered injuries and was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities said both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and investigators determined drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

The highway remained closed for several hours before reopening around 2:40 p.m.
