27-Year-Old Man Killed in Suspected DUI Crash on North Big Spring Street

Midland, TX (September 6, 2025) — A head-on crash on North Big Spring Street early Friday claimed the life of 27-year-old Hector Montero and left another driver seriously injured.

According to Midland police, the collision occurred around 1:55 a.m. in the 4400 block, just south of Loop 250.

Investigators said 42-year-old Tommy Torres Mendoza of Midland was speeding north in a 2024 GMC pickup when he veered into the southbound lanes and struck another vehicle head-on. The pickup rolled after impact.

Montero died at the scene. Mendoza sustained serious injuries and was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital.

Authorities believe alcohol contributed to the crash, and charges against Mendoza are pending as the investigation continues.
