Scooter Rider Suffers Serious Injuries in Hit-and-Run Crash on 23rd Street in Independence
Independence, MO (July 2, 2026) — A man riding a motorized scooter sustained serious injuries after a hit-and-run crash on 23rd Street early Monday morning. Authorities later located the vehicle, and the driver was believed to have been involved.
The collision happened around 1:20 a.m. on June 30 along westbound 23rd Street near Woodbury Drive. Investigators said a westbound vehicle struck the scooter rider before leaving the scene without stopping to provide assistance or report the incident.
Emergency responders transported the victim to a nearby hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
On July 2, the Independence Police Department announced that officers had identified and located both the vehicle and the driver connected to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Hit-and-Run is a Crime
A hit-and-run is a deadly offense that endangers lives and robs victims of their right to assistance. If you’re in an accident, do not leave the scene and check for injuries, 911 should be called immediately. Leaving can lead to criminal charges, even if the crash appears to be minor. As a driver, own it — someone’s life could hang in the balance.
If you observe a hit-and-run, report it and give any information you can. Assistance to law enforcement can really make a difference. Each of us can do our part to drive responsibly and with integrity, and to get everyone the help they need after a crash.
Leaving the scene of a crash can delay emergency medical care and may lead to more severe consequences for everyone involved. Drivers should always stop, call 911, and cooperate with authorities after any collision.
