Driver Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries After Head-On Crash in Thurston County
Thurston County, WA (April 25, 2026) — A driver sustained life-threatening injuries after a head-on crash on Rainier Road on Thursday night, leaving them trapped inside a burning vehicle for nearly an hour.
The collision happened at the intersection of Rainier Road and Fir Tree Road, southeast of Olympia. Emergency crews arrived to find the victim pinned inside the wreckage as flames threatened the vehicle.
Firefighters worked for more than 50 minutes to free the driver, cutting through the roof and structural pillars using specialized rescue tools. Medics stabilized the victim at the scene before an air ambulance transported them to Harborview Medical Center shortly after midnight.
Investigators determined that another driver had been traveling the wrong way before the crash. Witnesses reported taking evasive action moments before the collision. The suspect fled on foot but deputies quickly located and detained him nearby.
Authorities arrested the man on suspicion of DUI and vehicular assault after detecting signs of alcohol impairment. Officials later secured a warrant to obtain a blood sample as part of the investigation.
Multiple emergency agencies responded to assist in the rescue and medical evacuation. The victim remains under medical care as authorities continue to investigate the incident.
