Malachi Velasquez-McCormick Arrested after Horrific DUI Crash on Interstate 40 [Albuquerque, NM]

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (September 29, 2026) – Saturday, Malachi Velasquez-McCormick was arrested following a horrific DUI crash on Interstate 40.

The incident happened Friday night about 9:53 p.m. on Interstate 40 near Unser Boulevard.

NMSP said Velasquez-McCormick was driving a gray Dodge at a high rate of speed in the eastbound lanes near Unser Boulevard when he attempted to pass a semi-truck. As he moved back into the lane, the Dodge struck the rear passenger side of an SUV, causing both vehicles to roll over.

The SUV had six people inside, including the child who died. Velasquez-McCormick, three passengers in the Dodge, and three passengers from the SUV were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Police said they found multiple open alcohol containers in the Dodge. During an interview and sobriety tests, an officer observed signs of impairment, and Velasquez-McCormick told police he had consumed alcohol and used marijuana before the crash.

Velasquez-McCormick was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on charges of homicide by vehicle involving DWI, aggravated DWI causing bodily injury, reckless driving, and open container.
