1 Dead in Alturas Auto Accident on State Route 299 and Spicer Lane

ALTURAS, CA (December 7, 2025) – Saturday morning, a 56-year-old driver died in a horrific head-on crash on State Route 299 and Spicer Lane.

The incident happened at about 9:25 a.m. on State Route 299 and Spicer Lane.

CHP said the crash happened when the Ford was traveling east on State Route 299 and, for unknown reasons, moved into the westbound lane. A westbound Kenworth truck driven by a 65-year-old man from Klamath Falls, Oregon, struck the Ford.

The Ford’s driver died at the scene. The Modoc County coroner has not released the person’s name yet, as the family is still being notified.

Two children in the Ford, ages 4 and 2, were taken to Modoc Medical Center and later flown to Renown Regional Medical Center. The truck driver was not injured.

CHP said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be involved. All occupants in both vehicles were properly restrained.

Both vehicles came to rest near the point of impact, with the Ford stopping in the eastbound lane and the Kenworth ending up partly in the eastbound lane and on the south shoulder.

State Route 299 is a major east–west route through rural Modoc County, where long travel times can delay medical response.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who saw the collision or has information is asked to call CHP Dispatch at 530-252-1900. Investigators will release the driver’s name once the coroner has notified the family.
