1 Dead in San Diego Auto Accident on Interstate 5 near Clairemont Drive

SAN DIEGO, CA (June 18, 2026) – Sunday night, a 26-year-old man died in a horrific rear-end crash on Interstate 5 near Clairemont Drive.

The incident happened at about 11:41 p.m. on Interstate 5 near Clairemont Drive.

A 26-year-old San Diego man was driving an Infiniti northbound on Interstate 5 near Clairemont Drive when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle struck the rear of a Honda SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Investigators said the Infiniti then left the roadway and crashed head-on into a concrete pillar.

The Infiniti driver was transported to a hospital with major injuries and later died. The driver and passengers of the Honda were also taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities said a toxicology report is pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. CHP San Diego is continuing to investigate the cause and sequence of events.

The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Witnesses are asked to contact CHP San Diego at (858) 293-6000.
